As per usual, there was no grand plan or long-standing passion at work in my decision to go to France for a couple of weeks this fall. I did want a trip before later fall family and work-related travel and visits commenced, and while Italy, as per usual, was where my thoughts first drifted, I forced myself to put that aside, since that had been the location of my last solo trip.
Years ago, my friend Dorian Speed had taken her kids to Lyon (while they were visiting us when we were in Paris for a month in the fall of 2012) – and had liked it a lot. So I thought, huh. Let’s try that. And as usual, once the research began, the whole thing snowballed and became, somehow, inevitable.
What drew me (on paper) was the sense that while Lyon is the second (or third?) largest city in France, it’s not on the tourist radar as much as Paris, and then I started absorbing the history of the area, especially the ancient and religious history, and indeed, it became all the more inevitable.
